Giorgio van Meerwijk (b. 1998, Toulouse, France) uses a sensory perspective when creating sculpture. His sculptures combine processed and found materials with expertly made elements to create a blend of organic raw stuff. He investigates topics including how belief systems affect how people relate to their surroundings, folklore, and the connection between belief systems, medicine, and plants. His goal is to construct visual narratives that draw from a collective unconscious memory of recurrent pictures and symbols. By attempting to make sense of a romanticized and nostalgic vision of nature through the sensuality, intimacy, and narrative possibilities of materiality, contemplation and reverie become active processes of creation. This is a visceral reaction to materials and shapes, recalling awe and wonder in front of landscapes and organic elements.

Giorgio van Meerwijk resides and works in London. He attended London's Goldsmiths College and the Slade School of Fine Art. He was chosen for the Ingram Prize in 2023 and New Contemporaries in 2020. A duo show at London's Pipeline Contemporary and group shows in the UK, France, and Italy are among the recent exhibitions. In 2023, the British School of Rome awarded him the New Contemporaries Research Residence.
