Bronwyn Katz

Biography
Bronwyn Katz was born in Kimberley, South Africa in 1993 and holds a BaFA from University of Cape Town. She is based between Cape Town and Johannesburg, and her practice is multidisciplinary. Using raw materials and found objects, such as iron ore and mattresses, her work incorporates sculpture, installation, video and performance. Her practice erupts from the idea that land carries the memory of trauma, and she seeks to explore how the earth can communicate these. Although there are no fixed meanings to her work, they are deeply rooted in their geopolitical context and history of South Africa. Through storytelling Katz aims to draw attention to the precariousness of the social constraints and boundaries that continue to define our surroundings.

Currently Katz is an artist in residence at Gasworks in London, and she had her first solo show in London last year at White Cube titled ‘I turn myself into a star and visit my loved ones in the sky.’ Her work was also included in the group show The Milk of Dreams at this year's Venice Biennale. She is also one of the founding members of the collective iQhiya, a network of 11 Black women contemporary artists in South Africa.
